چکیده

We present a numerical simulation study of a simple monatomic Lennard-Jones liquid under shear flow, as a function of both temperature T and shear rate .gamma. By investigating different observables we find that (i) there exists a line, T(.gamma), in the (T-(.gamma)) plane that sharply marks the border between an "equilibrium" and a "shear-controlled" region for both the dynamic and the thermodynamic quantities; and (ii) along this line the structural relaxation time, tau(alpha)(T(.gamma)), is proportional to .gamma(-1), i.e., to the typical time scale introduced by the shear flow. Above T(.gamma), the liquid dynamics is unaffected by the shear flow, while below T(.gamma) both T and .gamma control the particle motion.

Molecular dynamics simulation of phase separating binary liquids in cylindrical Couette flow.

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study phase separation of a 50:50 (by volume) fluid mixture in a confined and curved (Taylor-Couette) geometry, consisting of two concentric cylinders. The inner cylinder may be rotated to achieve a shear flow. In nonsheared systems we observe that, for all cases under consideration, the final equilibrium state has a stacked structure. Depending on the l...

Far-from-equilibrium sheared colloidal liquids: disentangling relaxation, advection, and shear-induced diffusion.

Using high-speed confocal microscopy, we measure the particle positions in a colloidal suspension under large-amplitude oscillatory shear. Using the particle positions, we quantify the in situ anisotropy of the pair-correlation function, a measure of the Brownian stress. From these data we find two distinct types of responses as the system crosses over from equilibrium to far-from-equilibrium s...

Supercooled liquids under shear: A mode-coupling theory approach

We generalize the mode-coupling theory of supercooled fluids to systems under stationary shear flow. Our starting point is the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamic equations with a convection term. The method is applied to a two dimensional colloidal suspension. The shear rate dependence of the intermediate scattering function and shear viscosity is analyzed. The results show a drastic reductio...

Non-Equilibrium Steady State Response and Fluctuations of Sheared Nematic Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystals (LCs) are intermediate states between conventional liquids and solid crystals [1]. They have fluidity like liquids and anisotropy like solids at the same time. The molecules tend to point in one direction, which is designated by a unit vector n called the director. Many important physical phenomena of NLCs such as reorientation of director under external fields and flow properti...

Dynamics and correlation length scales of a glass-forming liquid in quiescent and sheared conditions.

We numerically study dynamics and correlation length scales of a colloidal liquid in both quiescent and sheared conditions to further understand the origin of slow dynamics and dynamic heterogeneity in glass-forming systems. The simulation is performed in a weakly frustrated two-dimensional liquid, where locally preferred order is allowed to develop with increasing density. The four-point densi...
